Now your customers can pay you online using a credit card using Intuit PaymentNetwork

YOU SPOKE AND WE LISTENED

“We NEED the ability for a customer to pay online with a credit card. . . seems like it should be a very basic part of Quickbooks online. . . People are scared of giving out routing numbers and bank info. Let them pay by credit cards!

Add a credit card option and you will have a winner

Intuit – when can we expect something like this to come out?? There are requests all over the forums and we have yet to hear any response (at least as far as I can see)…What’s the deal??

Excuse me for shouting, but… WE REALLY NEED OUR CUSTOMERS TO BE ABLE TO PAY ONLINE, USING A CREDIT CARD, BY CLICKING A LINK IN OUR EMAILED INVOICES.

The above is just a small sample of the many comments we’ve received about credit card functionality.

Thank you for all the feedback. We are happy to announce the ability to accept credit card payment on invoices! Find out more about this new feature below.

What’s the new feature?

QuickBooks online customers can now get invoices paid by credit card, in addition to bank payments.

This is an optional feature and can be managed (turned on/off) at any time by the small business by signing into IPN and clicking on ‘Profile’ in the left navigation bar.

What does it cost?

This feature, like bank payments will not have monthly, set up or termination fees. You will also not be charged any fixed authorization fees per transaction. The only fee you pay is 3.25% per transaction when a customer pays by credit card.

How do I turn it on?

Sign into IPN and click ‘Profile’ in the left navigation bar. Navigate to ‘Receiving Preferences’ and click the ‘Turn On’ button. That’s it – easy! All invoices you create and send after turning this option ON can be paid by either credit card or bank account. You can turn OFF this option at any time.

What will my customers see?

Your customers will see an additional option to pay by credit card when they pay online.

What’s not available in this update?

  • Currently, only Visa and MasterCard are supported.
  • The option to turn on/turn off credit card payment method is a global setting in IPN, and cannot be changed for every invoice.

A big thanks to our IPN customers for the feedback, which helps us build great products for you!Try it out and let us know what you think.

  1. Aaron W. Says:

How do you enable this from within QuickBooks Online?

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Aaron,
In this version, we haven’t built the ability to turn on cards from QuickBooks Online. It is a global setting in IPN. I would love to hear from you on how you’d like to have this work – would you like this to be part of Preferences? or on a per invoice basis?

      • Cheryl Says:

It would be really great if you could provide the HTML code so we can make the payment option available from our website. I run a business (like many others) that requires either partial or full payment inadvance. If we dont have the money we do not perform the service. So although we do some invoicing, it is minimal compared to upfront payments. Currently we have a “pay by credit card” Paypal link which is clumbsy and hard for people to figure out. I would much prefer to pay you the 3.25% than Paypal!

        • qboipnteam Says:

          Cheryl,
Thanks for your feedback. I’ve sent you an email with some options that I hope will help.

          • wcrnews Says:

I am also VERY interested in this. I have long wanted a “Pay your bill” option on our websites.

          • Stephen Says:

Hi, we also are interested in adding a pay your invoice online to our own website. We can add an SSL certificate and then direct people to the pay now link. Similar to @Cheryl, we have an online site that uses paypal but this is only for new purchase of hardware. Most of our sales are done through our sales reps and payments are processed using Intuit Merchant Center but not all sales agents have access to this. Embedding the code on our website would be a tremendous help.

Please forward instructions. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

        • Samara Says:

I second the need for this. This is something that I have needed and had to resort to using PayPal to do. Please, please, please incorporate this ability, so we can truly have an integrated payment system!

        • Chris Says:

Same with us – would lovve to get that info as well!

        • Tiffany Says:

I usually meet with all of my customer’s and can process their payments, however I also get very small orders through e-mail and our website and would love, love, love for them to have the ability to pay through either of those options. I do not have Quickbooks due to the variety of invoices we need to use. I have custom invoices that I would prefer to embed the option to pay by credit card link in. Please do your best to roll this out and quickly… Wouldn’t it be beneficial to IntuitGoPayment to have a little advertising space on our websites? :-)

          • qboipnteam Says:

Cheryl, wcrnews, Stephen, Samara, Chris, Tiffany: Thank you for your feedback.
You *can* make IPN available from your website, it’s not the same link as your invoice though. Just log into ipn.intuit.com, navigate to “Custom Pay Link” or “Ecommerce Buttons”. Please note that these payments don’t get automatically reconciled into QuickBooks Online. As of this moment, they are for bank payments only, but credit cards are coming soon. If you try out these features and you have feedback, please let me know!

      • Linda Wenger Says:

We desperately need this, part of preferences on global setting would be fine. It is also imperative that Am Ex work as well as about 70% of our clients use it. Please (begging on knees, release this soon!

      • Katie Says:

We need to be able to turn on the credit card option on a per invoice basis (just like we’re able to with the e-checks right now). Most of our larger customers pay by check and get a discounted rate because of that–we don’t even want them to have the option to pay with a credit card. But our smaller customers do pay with a credit card and being able to do so without calling in or emailing would be super and save us a lot of time.

        • qboipnteam Says:

Katie, thank you for your feedback. From your description, it sounds like you want to control the appearance of credit card on a per customer basis, as opposed to per invoice. If that’s correct, would you expect to manage this with your customer preferences? How would you imagine this to work?

      • Kim Says:

Why would you advertise this as a new feature as you log into Quickbooks Online? I am constantly having to tell the President of my company that, yes Quickbooks has that feature – but it is Not available in QBO. We are a SaaS consulting company – so we only use SaaS software. If Intuit doesn’t get behind advancing their ‘cloud’ systems they are going to loose the edge. Intacct is the upgrade we will look at – not a more feature rich desktop version of Quickbooks no matter how much it leverages the cloud but does not completely live in the cloud.

      • Aaron W. Says:

Do you plan on supporting American Express anytime in the near future?

      • Robert Koon Says:

        Hi,

I am currently a QB Premiere user, and am loving how smooth QBO is. I feel like Quickbooks in its entirety needs to move in this direction! There are only 4 features stopping me from switching over yesterday: the ability to cardswipe for lower merchant rates; the ability to process sales orders; and the ability to have multiple templates (two different quote templates or invoice templates), and the ability to attach a receipt to an expense and an invoice to a bill (Document Center). Are any of these currently on the roadmap?

        Keep up the great work!

        • qboipnteam Says:

Robert, thank you for your feedback. I’ve passed it on to the QuickBooks Online product manager.

          • QBO-PM Says:

Robert, thank you for your feedback on QBO. We hear you and will consider your feedback while planning our roadmap features.

Thank you and have a great new year.

      • Bill D Says:

I’d like to have on a per invoice basis as only a few of our customers use it…or be able to set it on an account basis…with an amount limit not to exceed. Above 2K most customers send a check.

        Thanks

      • UnifiedTechs Says:

I think the perfect solution would be have a check box on the invoice page, but control if the check-box is defaulting to checked or not in the customers settings. This way you don’t have to think about it most of the time, but when you do need to change it it is easy.

    • Michael Says:

We would love to see this work within Qbooks online invoices

How about we pay the same 3.15% per transaction fee

  2. Dwight Says:

Thanks – this is a great new feature. To make this perfect, please make it so invoices launched from the iPhone app include IPN payment links.

  3. Brendan C Says:

I have a merchant account through Intuit already. Will this payment system utilize that existing merchant account or is this something different?

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Brendan,
The two services are different at this point. You *can* connect to Intuit PaymentNetwork using your merchant account. Please email me and we can set up some time to walk through the process – and I’d love to understand your needs a little better.

      • Could you also send me an email regarding this? I would like to integrate this feature with my merchant account. Thanks.

      • Brendan C Says:

What’s your email address? I don’t see it published here.

      • Robert Says:

@qboipnteam – please email me as well. I signed up with the Intuit Merchant Service (IMS) specifically for the purpose of being able to accept credit cards from my clients when I send them invoices.

Now it seems that I will have to sign up with another Intuit service, Intuit Payment Network (IPN) that actually charges a higher rate.

If there is a way to use IMS, I would certainly be interested to here more about it.

Would also be interested in being able to implement Google Wallet (i.e Google merchant) or PayPal.

        All the best,

        • Turning Wrenches LLC Says:

Exactly what I am struggling to understand. Is there a way to simplify these payment programs and charge a competitive fee? The pay by check is one service, the credit card is another with smart phone; and 3.25% is more then double of some credit card processing service. Keep me posted when the payment options are simplified and have a competitive price like your online accounting software and check payment option.

  4. G. G. Says:

does this work for international clients/credit cards as well?

  5. Mahesh Says:

    Hi

Iam getting this problem when I try to enter a receipt. This is happening since 1 week

“An unexpected problem occurred on the server during your request. You can:

Wait a while and try again. The problem could be temporary and may be resolved in a few minutes.
Modify what you’re doing (for example, if you are trying to create a report, customize it to display less data).

If you continue to have problems, contact Support.”

Can any one help me with this issue?

    Regards
    Mahesh

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Mahesh,
I’ve passed on this feedback to our support team – this looks you’re using the merchant service functionality (IPN is not integrated into receipts). I hope someone will contact you soon.

    • Vinod K. Nair Says:

      Mahesh,

Can you list the steps you are taking before encountering this error. That would help narrow this down a bit more.

      Thanks
      Vinod

  6. Harold Says:

This is a welcome addition, but what about credit card swiping from within QBOE for face to face transactions?

I use Intuit Merchant Services and credit card swiping is available in Quickbooks Windows, Quickbooks Mac, GoPayment, and by logging on to the Virtual Terminal – but NOT in QBOE.

Intuit obviously has the technology to do it, so it must be choice not to.

Swiping is faster. Swiping reduces errors. Swiping may qualify for lower rates. Why don’t we have credit card swipe in QBOE?

    • qboipnteam Says:

Thank you for your feedback, Harold. I’ve passed on this feedback to the team working on merchant services in QuickBooks Online.

  7. Cheryl Says:

Oh, one more thing, your Droid swiper is horrible. Only actually works about every 5th or 6th time.

    • I second the swiper’s poor functionality. I’ve used Square for over a year and its worked 98% of the time!! I just wish Intuit would offer complete solution where we can RELIABLY swipe cards at a competitive rate, and integrate seamlessly with QBO!

    • Turning Wrenches LLC Says:

My Droid swiper never worked for me and the tech service reps did not help solve the issue either time I called. After having to manually input every transaction, I found a new processor. I am waiting for something that works through intuit that is more competitive in quality and pricing.

  8. Bernie Says:

Thank you for implementing this feature! It’s great to have it.

One question: What’s the relationship between ipn.intuit.com and merchantcenter.intuit.com?

The rate via merchantcenter.intuit.com is much lower than the 3.25% charged by ipn.intuit.com.

Is merchantcenter.intuit.com integration with Quickbooks Online on the roadmap? Or is ipn.intuit.com the only recommended, integrated way for Quickbooks Online users to take credit card payments (for now)?

    Thank you!
    Bernie

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Bernie
Thank you for your feedback. At this point, IPN is the way to get paid on QuickBooks Online emailed invoices (where your customer makes the payment, instead of you entering the payment).
Regarding your question about pricing, our hypothesis was that users would prefer a simple flat pricing, with no monthly fees, or no change in rates when, say, your customer chose to use a rewards card to pay.
I hear you about the need to simplify the experience for customers, and not have multiple offerings. We are working on this..

      • Harold Says:

I have credit card processing with Intuit Merchant Services. So Intuit gets my monthly fee for that service and I still have to pay the higher processing fee to allow my customers to pay an invoice with a credit card through Intuit Payment Network? Seem like a ripoff to me.

        • qboipnteam Says:

          Harold,
Thanks for your feedback. Credit card associations charge different interchange rates depending on a variety of factors, such as whether the card was swiped or not, whether a rewards card is being used or not. Our goal was to try and simplify the pricing, hence there are no set up fees, monthly fees, and no changes in rate, even if a rewards card is used. All IPN transactions fall in the “non-swipe” category.
Having said that, I hear you about the need to simplify the experience and pricing for customers like yourself who would prefer to have the best of both: the option to key in your customers card information (through Intuit Merchant Services) when recording a payment in QuickBooks Online, as well as have the ability for your customers to pay invoices. We’re working on this..

          • Harold Says:

My point, is I’m paying Intuit a monthly fee for processing credit cards, and I should get the same processing rates even if if I use IPN – it’s all Intuit isn’t it? So to charge a higher processing rate because the are no set-up fees or monthly fees doesn’t make sense and is a ripoff for those who do pay those fees. For me this may be a moot point as I am actively investigating how to stop using all Intuit products.

  9. Samara Says:

I was also wondering – will there ever be an option to allow someone to setup recurring payments online?

I would also love the ability to allow my clients to update their own information. Much of our business involves recurring payments and it is a major headache to update a simple credit card when needed.

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Samara,
We’ve heard this need from other customers as well, and will make it part of our future roadmap. Thank you for your feedback.

  10. Well, This is certainly a welcome change for me and my customers. We are a small utility company providing internet, telephone, and TV services. The customers have been asking for the ability to pay their invoices online by credit card for a LONG TIME. There is a feature that I would really like to see integrated in addition to this which would be the ability for a credit card convenience fee to be added for for the customers that choose the credit card option seeing as the 3.25% rate is fairly high. I really do not want to raise the utility rates for all customers to compensate for those that want to use this feature. Is this possibility on the road map? or can it be?

    • Jim Linder Says:

Here Here!! We run a preschool, and can’t afford to allow parents to pay with a credit card when the fee would be 40-60 dollars per parent. If they all decide to do it, this would cost us almost $3000. I would rather they pay it as a convenience fee.

  11. chills Says:

Is it possible for you to add an option to add the processing fees to the customer’s amount due? So if a customer’s invoices is $100, they would be charged $103.25 on their credit card. This could be done with either the entire fee, a percentage of the fee, a flat percentage, of a flat processing fee for credit card payments.

  12. qboipnteam Says:

Jesse, Jim and chills: thank you for your feedback. While I am no expert, there are rules about passing processing fees on to clients. It’s complicated – you can read more about it here: http://www.merchantcouncil.org/merchant-account/operation/pass-fee-customer.php

    I hope this helps.

    • I have investigates this thoroughly with the credit card companies. Yes there are rules…. but they are fairly simple. You ARE allowed to charge a convenience fee as long as it is not partial. Meaning…. you can not charge a different fee for visa than you would for American express or MasterCard. AS long as the fee is a set amount or a set percentage it is allowed. So… we really do need this feature added since the processing fees are so high (especially compared to other processing companies). When could we expect this to be implemented?

        • Hey there guys at intuit….

I see that you respond very quickly to other people here. I was curious as to why you have not responded to us in this thread? This is something we really need and may very well be the difference in our decision to use this product or not. When could we expect for the convenience fee feature to be implemented so that we are not stuck with these rates that are pretty high when compared to the rest of the credit card industry?

          Thanks.

          • qboipnteam Says:

Jesse, Britain – As far as I know, card rules are pretty stringent on including convenience fees for products and services, and the laws vary by state and industry. I’ve a question out to our legal team for further details if you’re interested. Thank you for your feedback!

            • This actually is not really an answer… or very helpful either. This is very simple. You could easily call any one of (or all of) the credit card companies to verify that it is both legal and allowed. You could also realize that most suppliers (such as computer parts suppliers), government agencies (such as taxes or vehicle registration), utility companies (such as telephone, water, gas, etc), and TONS of other industries charge what they call a “convenience fee” to cover the cost of processing credit cards. The only rule is that the fee must be equal for all types of cards…. in other words, you can not charge a different rate as a convenience fee for visa than you would for MasterCard, etc. Since your processing fees are so high, we really need this feature available. Ideally it would be a set percentage (like your 3.25 percent) that would be added to the total invoice amount….. That way it would only affect those customers that wish to pay with a credit card yet it would fall within the allowed (and legal) limitation of the credit card companies.

Please…… please….. do a small amount of research (such as the calls to the credit card companies) before you just assume that you know the answer. Your answer in this case is flat out wrong.

That being said…. when could we expect follow up to this? it is quite obvious that there are a lot of us out here that would love to use this system but really can’t afford it…. and we really do not want to raise out prices for products/services to our customer to cover the cost either. This is such a simple remedy to the situation. We really need it.

              Thanks,
              Jesse

  13. Sandy Says:

What if I have a merchant account from someone else. Can I use my merchant account that I already have and accept payments?

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Sandy,
Sorry – you cannot use a non-Intuit merchant account. If you have an Intuit Merchant Services or GoPayment account you can use it to sign up for IPN, or you can use your QuickBooks Online login. I hope this helps!

  14. Wendy Says:

What is IPN? Is that different than Quickbooks Online? How do I access it to turn on this option for Quickbooks Online’s e-mailed invoices? Thank you all for finally rolling out this feature. I’d been shopping other invoicing companies because you didn’t offer this feature!

  15. Tope afuye Says:

Likes this? But the issue of credit card is not easy to get

  16. Your info says the fee is 3.25%, however the screenshot shows 3.5%. Which is it?

  17. Russell Scott Says:

How do I get this – I cannot seem to find where to apply for a Merchant Account for online it only offers it for desktop plus it says it has a monthly fee of £15!

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Russell,
You can sign up for IPN with your QuickBooks Online login. You can find in at the bottom of Create Invoice (“Learn More”) or in Preferences>Accept Online Payments.

  18. Mark Says:

Why such a high fee per transaction? 3.25% seem pretty high

    • Berge Nalbantian Says:

Thats because there are no set up fees, monthly fees, and the customer isnt swiping the card, which is considered more of a risk.

Its actually not that bad. I use another system called Square at square.com. They charge 2,75 % for swiped cards and 3.5% for non swiped cards and they also accept AMEX and Discover

      Hope that helps you

  19. Berge NAlbantian Says:

Please get American Express & Discover onboard and this service will become unstoppable !!!!!!!

  20. Robert Says:

I would like to make the payment option available from my website, what options do you offer? All my billing is in advance.

    • qboipnteam Says:

Robert – You *can* make IPN available from your website, it’s not the same link as your invoice though.

  21. Brad Jackson Says:

Great idea. Now just charge a more realistic % and I’ll use it. As of now, Authorize.net is under 2% for CC fees.

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Brad,
As Berge pointed out, Credit card associations charge different interchange rates depending on a variety of factors, such as whether the card was swiped or not, whether a rewards card is being used or not. Our goal was to try and simplify the pricing, hence there are no set up fees, monthly fees, and no changes in rate, even if a rewards card is used. All IPN transactions fall in the “non-swipe” category.

  22. qboipnteam Says:

Wow, what a lot of Xmas gifts to receive while I was on vacation! Sorry about the delay in responding to all the queries. I hope I’ve responded to everyone. Thank you SO MUCH for your your interest in the product and your valuable feedback. Please keep it coming!

  23. This Blog was most helpful, your ideas are straight to the point, and the colors are cool too.

  24. Roger Maule Says:

i tried to sign up for IPN, but it asks for a routing number, is this only a US thing? I’m in the UK

  25. Michelle B Says:

Is there a way to add the 3.25% to the invoice so the customer pays the “convenience” fee instead of my small business? If there is, I’m switching from PayPal TODAY!

  26. Dave G Says:

If we can offer a discount for other IPN payments, that seems to be the solution to the “convenience fee” issue. Just give us the option to offer a cash discount if they pay via e-check through IPN. I will mark up all my invoices 3.25%.

    • qboipnteam Says:

      Dave,
We have an option that allows you to offer a discount for ACH/bank payments on payment requests sent from ipn.intuit.com. You can try it out by logging in to ipn.intuit.com and sending a payment request. We haven’t integrated this ability into QuickBooks Online as yet and I’d love to hear your feedback if you try it out.
      Thanks

  27. Aarthi Says:

    Hello Everybody,
Happy new year. I am a product manager working on IPN with Quickbooks Online. In the past some of you have requested IPN enabled statements on this blog. I would love to hear your thoughts on statements and have scheduled a call tomorrow at Noon PACIFIC TIME (Jan 25th, 2012 at 12:00 PM). I hope you can join at:
    1-888-875-3049 Conference Code: 6509442860

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you
    Aarthi

  28. Dave G Says:

Why not make this feature available as a shopping cart along with a website add-on for Quickbooks Online? Make inventory items selectable to appear online and be able to add a picture. With some control over format, this would be an ideal product.

    • Martin Says:

Ditto Dave’s request. Also, an option for charging a convenience fee would be appreciated.

      • qboipnteam Says:

        Dave and Martin,
Thank you for your feedback. Great idea. We’ll add this to our roadmap.

        • Martin Says:

Also, I don’t mean to pile on, but while you’re watching this, you already have recurring payments in IPN, so a way to tie those into a recurring invoice or subscription in QBO would be nice. Right now you can only create/manage those from IPN. That would also fit in nicely with the store idea.

  29. Leonid Tunik Says:

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but how is IPN different from Intuit Merchant Services? We have integrated our website with Merchant Services, but would also like the ability to have customers pay invoices online. All the different Intuit services are a bit confusing.

    • Aarthi Says:

      Dear customers,

We love your feedback and want to hear from you on enabling online payment for statements. If you are interested, please email me at aarthi_srinivasan@intuit.com?

@Leonid Tunik: I have directed your question to the appropriate Product management team and they will get back to you.

      Thank you

  30. Due to my workload, this is the first chance I’ve had to read about your online payment options. Has any progress been made to include the pay by credit card option on invoices to customers? I manage a professional association that has been trying to accomplish online payments for a couple of years but none of the providers we have considered are able to handle what we need. I believe, the ability to offer payment by credit card through Quick Books online would resolve the issues!

  31. iRepairIT Says:

Please add me to the list of people who would like to see a way to swipe cards from my PC for lower merchant rates, seems silly that when a client sitting in my office hands me a Credit Card that I need to pull out my iPhone/iPad when I’m sitting at my desk already with a USB card reader.

We are a IT consulting firm and I can think of 2 dozen of our clients who would switch if this feature was added.
