Two sentences on your business…
At Intuit, we always admire our customers who have pursued the path of starting their own business; in many cases, it is quite a big risk.
But, what led you to start your own business?
- Were you looking to financial independence
- The promise of being your own boss?
- The dream of making a difference?
- …. or something entirely different?
And, why did you choose the profession you practice?
- Did you learn a trade at a large corporation and translate it to your own business
- Or did you turn your hobby into a career, or simply pursue something new?
We think entrepreneurs are their own breed and love hearing their great stories.
Tell us two sentences of why you are the way you are and include a link to your website (Free PR!)
Looking forward to hearing from you!

I started Mindshare Studios because I had a love for web technology and was excited to build a business. Starting my own company seemed to be the best option I had in the small job market I’m in (Santa Fe, NM).

I started my own software business 20 years ago with a dream, still unrealized, of revolutionizing electronic publishing.
I started off in computers at age 14 (this was back in the dark ages of mainframe computing & punched cards!), when I took a Fortran language course at a Scout Explorer post and instantly felt I had found my calling. 40 years later, I still think so!

I began Mary Reed Public Relations 23 years ago because I wanted the independence and challenges that come with being self employed. Starting a public relations business allowed me to to use my writing skills and the national public relations contacts and know-how I had developed while working at Texas Monthly Magazine, the nation’s leading regional monthly, to help other professionals succeed. So far, so good!

I started Kenli Truck Licensing (now Kenli, Inc.) eight years ago because I wanted my hard work to benefit me, not my employer. Got carried away with my FIRST EVER blog posting! To answer the original questions: in 1988 was working a “real job”, lots of people being laid off so I wanted a contingency plan “just in case.” Took H&R Block tax course, they hired me part time for two tax seasons, then later worked part time for a CPA firm in Houston area – still do some work for them even though I’m in Sugar Land, TX. When I WAS laid off from the “real job” a few years later, I had another way to make money. By this time, I found I LOVED preparing tax returns and the rest………is history.

I was in the entertainment business since I was ten years old. I am now 47. After nearly 30 years working in entertainment management, mainly with cruise lines, I was laid off. Started my own business and never looked back. I now manage several entertainers careers, act as a talent agent (Fla Talent Agent License: TA969), as as a theatrical agent (booking several shows such as “Gennifer Flowers in ‘The World Goes ‘Round’” and “Assisted Living: The Musical®”) and produce shows. We mainly work with the casino, cruise line, theatrical and corporate industries.

All my life struggled with health, weight, and nutrition issues. In my 60′s, I found metabolic typing (a personalized approach to determine nutritional needs), the first thing in my entire life that really worked!
So even though I was “retired”, I decided to become certified as a metabolic typing advisor. One thing led to another, and I now hold several certifications in the health and nutrition fields, plus co-authored a book on ways to improve your health. Currently, I work online with clients all around the world to improve their health, hit their weight targets, and get better energy and digestion.

I’m an independent bookkeeper and Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor. After working over 20 years in a variety of administration and acccounting positions in various industries I realized in 2001 small businesses no longer needed to hire someone like me full-time anymore due to advancements in technology. So I wondered, what should I do? Have ten part time jobs or start a business and find ten clients. I have obtained my goal and now I’m learning to market and grow my business to provide bookkeeping services to clients who want to outsource this task and to subcontract this work to home-based bookkeepers who need the work. We are located in Wilmington Delaware.

Franchising is in the works for other local mavens around the country, but we’re in Miami for now.

I started Ferro Cosmetics Mineral Makeup because as a pro makeup artist- I found that so many women were allergic to so many brands, and so many women just couldnt dress their outter selves as they wished they could due to breakouts or allergic reactions. Then I discovered how much big companies bend the truth about their “all natural mineral makeup”, so I decided to create an entire line that was 100% natural, but with all the glam and variety of regular makeup, and ONLY pure minerals from the earth- not man made ingredients. Proud to say we have never had a return due to clients not liking our products (other than color exchanges)- and neither have any of our resellers!

We would like to consider using it for order entry for our florist shop.
Has anyone successfully use QuickBooks for entering florist orders with card messages, recipient names, addresses, etc?
September 22, 2010 at 8:00 am
I started my freelance bookkeeping company out of necessity. I needed an apartment and a life and took my skills in accounting and went independent and it’s been a trial. Along the way I have taken full time gigs with crazy clients and have had to leave due to their insane behavior. I use Craigslist to get clients and it’s scary because before it had the reputation for killers and prostitutes it was an open forum for insane types but I found depending on how you write your free ads you are capable of eliminating the spammers and the crazies and obtain good steady clients if you persist and don’t let a day of no calls get your down.
Know your self worth, know your clients, know the market prices and then go under just a little in order to make it work for you. You can always increase your rate as the economy improves but you should never go down so far as to not be able to live while working.
September 22, 2010 at 8:05 am
Catherine, I would like to know more about using Craigslist for advertising.
Can you tell me where you are located and under what category you place your ads? You can respond to me at bernice@bdfinancialservices.com.
Sincerely,
Bernice

I started my own public accounting firm because of the typical treatment of employees at many small public accounting firms. Typically we are worked slavishly during tax season for virtually no additional compensation. Moreover, we are often given unrealistic time budgets to complete our assignments even though many of the client files are a total mess. Audit assignments that would require 250 hours to complete in conformity to professional standards are budgeted for as little as 100 hours. After tax season, many of the firms lay you off to save on overhead over the summer months. At one firm where I was employed, 33 of the 85 professional employees were terminated over the course of a year. Partners have little appreciation of the 60 to 70 hours per week you work, more concerned about maintaining their salaries, typically five times what the average grunt earns at a public accounting firm. That explains the average turnover rate at public accounting firms of 33%.
